Text: What is a computer?

Parágrafo
Ideia central de cada parágrafo
(1) Nowadays, in most modern societies, almost everybody has an idea about what a computer is. We depend on computers in every aspect of our lives whether we know how to use one or not. But does everyone really know how a computer works inside?
(a) Termos da língua inglesa utilizados em diferentes línguas.
(2) A computer is an electronic machine which processes data and provides the results of the processing as information. There are three basic steps in the computing process. The first one is input, which consists of feeding data into the computer’s memory. Then comes the processing: the program is run and the computer processes the data by performing a set of instruction. The third and final step is the output furnished by the computer, which allows the user to see the results either in printed form or on the screen.
(b) Dependência do computador nas sociedades modernas.
(3) The world of computers has created a specific language of its own. English words such as software and hardware are used worldwide and have been borrowed by many different languages. Software is information in the form of data and programs, and hardware refers to the electronic and mechanical parts that make up a computer system.
(c) Nem todos sabem utilizar o computador, apesar de sua presença na maioria das sociedades.
(4) Despite the constant presence of computers in most societies, it is a great mistake to believe that everybody in the world is computer-literate, i.e., is familiar with computers and knows how to use them properly. In some contemporary societies, many people still have no idea about the existence of computers, and even in the so-called developed countries, there are lots of people who do not know or do not care about what a computer is.
(d) Definição do termo computador e descrição das etapas básicas do processo de computação.

Preserving Culture in the Amazon

A gripping account of a collision of cultures, “Xingu” tells the inspiring true story of the three Villas Bôas brothers, who became the leading advocates for Brazil’s Amazonian Indians, an effort that culminated in the founding of a mammoth tribal preserve.

Directed by Cao Hamburger, “Xingu” begins in 1943, when the brothers — Orlando (Felipe Camarago), Cláudio (João Miguel) and Leonardo (Caio Blat) — sign up for Brazil’s March to the West, an expedition to explore and open the interior for development. Smitten by the land’s raw beauty, they are also fascinated by the indigenous people there.

Orlando, the eldest and a natural politician, defuses the tensions when they meet the Xavante, who have not seen white men before. When a flu epidemic kills half the tribe, the brothers vow to protect the natives from the forces of civilization that they represent. “We are the poison,” Cláudio says, “and the antidote.”

The brothers eventually win the creation, in 1961, of the Xingu National Park, a preserve larger than Maryland. The film makes clear that not everyone agrees with the Xingu approach, that one answer does not fit all. But as natives maintain traditional lives there, they can integrate into the larger society, by their own choice and at their own speed.

Unfortunately, the movie covers almost three decades choppily. But Mr. Camarago and Mr. Miguel convey the stubborn commitment that made the brothers so revered by the tribes. The native actors add authenticity to the production, which uses the Tupí language and films in the park. In all, “Xingu” is a fitting tribute to the Villas Bôas vision.

Biography - Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany on March 14, 1879. As a child, Einstein revealed an extraordinary curiosity for understanding the mysteries of science (started only at age 10/11). A typical child (only to his socio-economic class — educated middle class), Einstein took music lessons, playing both the violin and piano — a passion that followed him into adulthood. Moving first to Italy and then to Switzerland, the young prodigy graduated from high-school in 1896.

In 1905, while working as a patent clerk in Bern, Switzerland, Einstein had what came to be known as his “Annus Mirabilis” — or “miracle year”. It was during this time that the young physicist obtained his Doctorate degree and published four of his most influential research papers, including the Special Theory of Relativity. In that, the now world famous equation "e = mc2" unlocked mysteries of the Universe theretofore unknown.

Ten years later, in 1915, Einstein completed his General Theory of Relativity and in 1921 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics (iconic status cemented in 1919 when Arthur Eddington’s expedition confirmed Albert Einstein’s prediction). It also launched him to international superstardom and his name became a household word synonymous with genius all over the world.
Einstein emigrated to the United States in the autumn of 1933 and took up residence in Princeton, New Jersey and a professorship at the prestigious Institute for Advanced Study.
Today, the practical applications of Einstein’s theories include the development of the television, remote control devices, automatic door openers, lasers, and DVD-players. Recognized as TIME magazine’s “Person of the Century” in 1999, Einstein’s intellect, coupled his strong passion for social justice and dedication to pacifism, left the world with infinite knowledge and pioneering moral leadership.
